Green spaces in Islington

The "Highbury Fields" in London, England, are a spacious green area in the district of Islington, considered the largest park in this neighborhood. With an area of just under 12 hectares, this park offers a welcome oasis amidst the urban hustle and bustle of North London, connecting the busy intersection of Highbury Corner with the charming shops of Highbury Village. The attraction is particularly known for its versatility: it serves as a recreational space, sports facility, and historical site, attracting both locals and visitors who want to experience a mix of nature and culture.

Historical sites in London

The park consists of generous lawns that invite you to take a walk, have a picnic, or simply relax. It is surrounded by imposing Georgian and Victorian houses, whose architecture gives the area a special character. Some of these buildings still have old coach houses, indicating the area's long history. The rows of trees along the paths provide shade and give the park a pleasant structure, while the open spaces offer an impressive expanse rarely seen in a densely populated city like London. Particularly striking is the contrast between the urban environment and the quiet, almost rural atmosphere of Highbury Fields.

Sports facilities at Highbury Fields

Sports enthusiasts will find numerous opportunities to be active here. The park features an artificial turf football field with floodlights, four netball courts, and eleven hard court tennis courts that can be used year-round. The Highbury Leisure Centre complements this offering with a swimming pool and additional indoor sports facilities. For families with children, there is a playground that is particularly popular on warm days. These facilities make Highbury Fields a lively meeting place for people of all ages who want to be active or simply enjoy time outdoors.

Oases of tranquility in London

Historically, the park also has much to offer. At the southern end stands an ornate Art Nouveau monument that commemorates the fallen soldiers of the Boer War – a testament to London's tumultuous history. At the northern entrance stands the Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Clock Tower, an elegant clock that commemorates the queen's diamond jubilee and adds another historical touch to the park. Another interesting detail is the connection to the artist Walter Sickert, whose former house on Highbury Place is marked with a plaque. Sickert used it partially for a somewhat unsuccessful art school, adding a cultural facet to the place.

Attractions in Highbury Village

In addition to the sports and historical attractions, there are dining options to complete the stay. The "Oasis Café" in the park serves a selection of snacks, drinks, and light meals that can be enjoyed indoors or under the shady trees outside. It is a popular meeting point for walkers and athletes alike, adding a social component to the park. The café's location near the tennis courts and playground makes it particularly convenient for families or groups.

Highbury Fields are also a place of peace and relaxation. Despite their proximity to one of London's busiest thoroughfares – the A1 that passes by Highbury Corner – the park offers a surprising silence, enhanced by the generous green spaces and the demarcation by residential buildings. Here you can jog, walk dogs, or simply enjoy the view of the surrounding terraces from a bench, some of which have been standing since the 1760s. For nature lovers, the numerous old trees and open meadows provide an escape from urban life.

Much loved and actively used, this relatively small but beautiful park seems to have something for everyone, from tennis courts, cafe, multi-purpose courts, children's adventure play area, fitness centre and more. It is actively used by joggers, or a place to relax on the benches or the grass. Many aspiring footballers have dribbled on these blades of grass.

Highbury Fields is a beautiful open space park. Well maintained and with a great community vibe, it's a lovely place for a run, spending time relaxing or for a game of tennis. The sports centre is nice and well maintained by Better and there are a few places to grab a bite or drink in or nearby.

It was in the early morning that i have been walking up from highbury and islington till Roland way by the park of higbury fields.... all was quite and peacefull... the silence was broken from the steps of many riders or from couple of gentle friends of their nice dogs.... i have been stopping myself sitting on a bench beside the one which has got clearly the memory of someone that used to sit there.... two branch of flowers and couple of little candles on it let me think a moment to owr loved mayesty Queen Elizabeth II .... 8 september 2022 ... end of games.... no more time.... sad.... sadness keep me sometimes from getting out completely.... but now im homeless... no where to close myself in.... and i feel 👽 more than never.... love and peace.....
